Talk about the “new” juxtaposed against the old. Tonight, Canadian indie comedy-drama The Chester Kids, shot in 2009, will get its first hometown screening at an auditorium celebrating a 100th anniversary.
The 385-seat Gayety Theatre in Collingwood, Ontario has been around since 1911 and sports some great Art Deco touches. Local writer-director Travis Ainley filmed not just in Collingwood but also nearby Stayner and Wasaga Beach.
The movie is all about the ongoing relationship of two male friends, Stu (Stu Hammill) and Harry (Brandon Coffey), who are reunited at the early twentysomething point in the small town of Chester when the former returns from college. Their time involves a lot of pot smoking, sex talk, and generally Kevin Smith-territory conversation topics. As well as a major plot twist.
Ainley honed his skills at the Toronto Film College. After winning a Rising Star Award at the Canada International Film Festival and also playing at the Mississauga Independent Film Festival, Ainley finally gets to share his debut effort in his hometown Should be a party.
